Holy crap! The entire wax ring was gone, leaving only the black plastic piece. It had been over twenty years since the toilet was removed. You can see that there was a lot of rust and possible corrosion.
The height of the ring is longer than the width; it's more of an oval shape. You can also see that the inside walls are rusted out.
I then applied a grinder to the rusted surface area of the flange.
Instead of a wax ring, I used a new product, Sani Seal. ($11.95 at Lowes vs. wax ring for about $5 bucks). Works great! Unlike wax, which doesn't decompress, the Sani Seal allows for numerous tweaks during the toilet installation.
